AUTHOR VISITS TOPIC: THE MAKING OF THE BALD EAGLE'S VIEW OF AMERICAN HISTORY
Audience Recommended Audience: Grades 3,4,and 5 Audience size: 50-100 Three presentations per day Fee: $400 plus travel, lodging and meal expenses.
Autographing Some schools wish to order copies of my book, which I am happy to autograph. This can be done through a local bookstore or directly from Charlesbridge Publishing Please allow adequate time for autographing, about one to two minutes per book.
Facilities Needed I bring my computer and a projector. I'll simply need a white wall or a screen in front of my audience, and a projection table.
Presentation Content I love an interactive discussion, asking my audience to guess how an issue might have been resolved. I will explain the process of the book from the first conversation with my editor, where I proposed the concept, to the problems and high points encountered during the writing. I will discuss the contributions from professional fact checkers, ecology experts, the illustrator, and the various departments at my publisher. I use a PowerPoint presentation to show how the book evolved from the draft which received a contract to a "Dummy," then a "Rough," and on to the "Proofs." And, let me tell you, a lot of interesting things happened in the process!
Accommodations & Expenses If the location is further than fifty miles from my home expenses will include mileage (if I drive), fares, meals and lodging. Though I appreciate people's generosity in offering to share their homes, I need time to be alone and prefer that arrangements be made for a clean, quiet, non-smoking room. Elegance is not necessary. Dinner with one or several teachers or librarians is always a treat, but I don't mind being left on my own.
